Considered one of Europe’s most picturesque cities, Amsterdam is a destination for lovers.

You’ll fall head over heels for the romantic canals (all 165 of them!) and the tall, narrow houses that date back to the city’s Golden Age of the 17th century. Hop on a bicycle, the Dutch’s beloved mode of transportation, and explore. Pass by the Royal Palace on Dam Square, cycle the Nine Streets (or De Negen Straatjes), and pause for a few quiet moments in Anne Frank’s house.

If art makes your heart beat fast, visit the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum where you can swoon over Rembrandts and Vermeers. For something dazzling, visit the Diamond Museum, honoring Amsterdam’s diamond polishing history. And for the avant-garde, there’s Electric Ladyland, a museum of fluorescent art!

If it’s food that gives you butterflies, start with Dutch favorites like Stroopwafels and patatje oorlog, a fast-food favorite made up of fries loaded with mayo, raw onions, and spicy peanut satay sauce. But given the Netherlands’ colonial past, don’t miss out on the amazing Indonesian and Surinamese food found throughout the city, as well. Try dishes like Rijsttafel, the Dutch creation of a large Indonesian meal, or a roti takeout.

And if you just plain love living it up, head to the coffee bars (that serve much more than coffee), the dance clubs (best in Rembrandtplein and Leidseplein), an ice bar (bundle up!), or the nachtcafés (night cafés) which stay open until 4am even on a weeknight. On your way to Chinatown, go ahead and pass through the famous Red Light District to see what the fuss is all about.
